The Celebration of Mandela Community Committee will be holding a
celebratory funeral event for Dr Nelson Mandela starting on Saturday 14th
December at 2pm with a ‘Walk of Respect’ from the Mandela Gardens in
Millennium Square, LS1 to the Mandela Community Centre, Chapeltown Road,
LS1. The general public is invited to join us as we honour Dr Mandela’s
‘Long Walk to Freedom’. There will be a police escort and the walk will
end with light refreshments at Mandela Community Centre.
Please wear white or African attire to pay tribute and celebrate Nelson
From 4.00-6.30pm at Mandela Community Centre the programme includes
poetry, dance, music, open-mic sessions and big-screen documentaries,
including Dr Mandela’s visit to Leeds in 2001.
There will be a traditional ‘Wake Keeping’ from 7pm at Leeds West Indian
Centre, 10 Laycock Place, LS7. Members of the public are invited to bring
food and drink to add to a prepared buffet.
On Sunday 15th December from 10am there will be a live-screening of the
funeral service from South Africa at Leeds West Indian Centre. Live
tributes, African drumming and Kora and steel pan music performance will
be provided. A book of condolence will be available.
Donations will be collected at both events for one of Mandela’s charities.
